Interest earned on bank deposits and government securities is taxable income in Nepal, but most taxpayers never calculate it because the bank does the work. Financial institutions withhold tax on interest at the source, meaning the amount credited to your account is already net of the levy and the department is informed of the gross payment. The withholding rate faced by a depositor can be at a concessional level compared with the marginal rate, which creates an important consequence. Because the gross interest is still added to your income for the year, someone whose salary partly falls in a lower band will have withheld too much and can recover the difference, while a higher earner may owe more at filing time. The paperwork that matters is the interest certificate the bank issues at fiscal year end. Bondholders receive the same treatment, with interest on debentures and government bonds withheld at source and reconciled in the return. Tracking these certificates and the tax deducted against them converts what is often an unfilled surprise into a planned line of the annual return.
