An audit notice from the revenue department selects a taxpayer's records for examination across a defined period, and the notice names the windows, the locations and the documents the department wishes to see. Responding well is a matter of the file the taxpayer keeps, because an audit is answered with records, not with promise. The documents any seasoned file contains: the returns for the period, the complete withholding certificates, the purchase and sales registers, the VAT returns with their supplier invoices and the bank statements that tie the entries to reality. The department's letter may list specific items, but a complete standing file makes the specific answer almost trivial. The deadline in the notice decides everything. Records must be produced within the period stated, and where the production is genuinely impossible, the response should be filed explaining the gap rather than letting the silence stand. Most audits of a well-kept business conclude with the same finding, no adjustment, and the notice is a request for ordinary proof. Karkakura's audit checklist lets a notice that lands in the mailbox meet a file that was already ready in the drawer.
